Nurturing forests. Energizing communities.

ACFOR Energy transforms sustainably sourced forest byproducts into efficient, net-zero heating for commercial and industrial consumers across Atlantic Canada.

Turning forest restoration into renewable heat

ACFOR Energy emerges from Atlantic Canada as an innovative renewable energy company, transforming sustainably sourced biomass into efficient heating solutions for both commercial and industrial needs, while championing restorative forestry practices and community engagement.

Forest byproducts that society considers waste—the tops, branches, and low-grade wood removed during stand improvement—become net-zero fuel. When we improve a forest, the low-grade wood material we remove goes towards heating facilities across Atlantic Canada, reducing dependence on fossil fuels while funding the next cycle of forest restoration.

The ACFOR Energy difference

Modern biomass heating far outperforms the systems it replaces, in efficiency, emissions, and community impact.

90%
Thermal efficiency

Modern biomass boilers achieve up to 90% thermal efficiency, delivering clean, high-performance heat from a renewable, locally sourced fuel.

Net-zero
Carbon footprint

Biomass sourced from sustainably managed forests is carbon-neutral: trees re-absorb over their lifetime what combustion releases.

Local
Supply chain

Biomass is sourced directly from ACFOR's ecological forestry operations across Atlantic Canada, keeping revenue in the region and reducing transport emissions.

ACFOR Energy works hand-in-hand with Maritime communities and institutions to deliver dependable, locally sourced biomass heat. Keeping fuel sourcing close to home reduces heating costs for consumers and builds local resilience against fluctuating fossil-fuel prices.

Renewable heat in action

From campuses to private residences, ACFOR Energy installations are running across Atlantic Canada.

NSCC Bridgewater, Fröling TM500 boiler room
Institutional, Launched January 2021

NSCC Lunenburg Campus, Bridgewater NS

Launched in January 2021, this installation features a Fröling TM500 boiler with 500 kW of capacity. The system displaces 90% of fossil-fuel heating at both the Bridgewater Provincial Courthouse and the Provincial Building, while supplying additional heat to the NSCC Lunenburg campus.

Biomass is sourced directly from local forest restoration groups, creating a market for low-grade wood that would otherwise have no economic value.

  • Fröling TM500, 500 kW capacity, high-efficiency and low-emissions
  • Custom chip-unloading conveyor system designed and installed by ACFOR
  • Replaces 90% of fossil fuel heating across two provincial buildings
  • Greenhouse gas reductions equivalent to removing hundreds of cars from the road annually

Private Residence, Cocagne NB

Completed in the summer of 2021, this residential installation features a Fröling T4e boiler with 60 kW of capacity. The system heats a private home using biomass sourced exclusively from ACFOR's local ecological forestry operations.

A standout feature of this installation is an integrated snow and ice melt system for the driveway, a practical demonstration of how surplus heat capacity can be put to work.

  • Fröling T4e, 60 kW capacity
  • Biomass 100% sourced from ACFOR's own restorative forestry operations
  • Integrated driveway snow and ice melt system
  • Complete elimination of fossil fuel heating for the residence

From forest to heat and back

ACFOR's forestry and energy divisions form a complete ecological and economic cycle. The stand improvement work that creates healthier forests also generates the biomass that fuels communities. Revenue from that energy flows back into the next cycle of forest restoration.

We operate on the unceded territories of the Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqey, and Peskotomuhkati peoples. Our commitment to ecosystem-based forest management is grounded in restoring Wabanaki forest diversity, utilizing forest byproducts for renewable, net-zero community energy.
